With help from the U.S. Fire Administration and the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association, here are 10 tips for homeowners to keep their fireplaces safe and clean.
HAVE YOUR CHIMNEY CLEANED EVERY YEAR Your chimney should be checked annually by a chimney sweep to inspect for obstructions as well as buildups of creosote, residue that can be highly flammable and leads to many chimney fires. Sweeps can also spot cracks and other damage to chimneys that could lead to possible problems.
CLEAR THE AREA AROUND THE HEARTH Flammable objects, including decorations, newspapers and books, should be kept clear of the area near a fireplace. Objects should be at least two feet away, experts say.
INSTALL A METAL MESH SCREEN A mesh screen can keep embers and sparks from leaping out of the fireplace and into harm's way.
OPEN YOUR DAMPER The damper should be open all the way when a fire is started, and it should not be closed until the fire is completely out
NEVER LEAVE A FIRE UNATTENDED Make sure the fire is completely out before going to bed or leaving the house.
INSTALL SMOKE AND CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS Detectors are a line of defense for your family if a fire gets out of hand
