When we built our home in 2002, we researched heating options and decided to install a geothermal system that relies on electrical heat pumps, as opposed to carbon fuels. The cost was 100 per cent higher than a conventional system, but we believed we would be playing a small part in reducing use of carbon fuels, and somewhere down the road there might be a payback (although a prudent investor probably wouldn't have made that bet).
Our system results in a greater use of electricity than the normal household, but we use a very small amount of natural gas (cooktop and stove, and a fireplace that is seldom turned on). Still, we will be hit with the proposed Hydro increase.
BC Hydro should consider a number of different factors when applying a rate increase. In some cases, people have no choice but to heat their homes using electricity (Whistler, for example) and in other cases, such as ours, a choice was made to reduce the effects on the environment. Shouldn't people in these situations be given some consideration? We use a little more electricity, but by tapping into the earth we are a net saver of energy when compared to those who solely rely on fossil fuels
