Previous owners bought the property in 2003 and were all set to restore the original brick house, but they looked at the financial bottom line and looming construction headaches and decided to tear down and start from scratch.
The miracle is that the new house fits neatly into the mature neighbourhood and incorporates many features from the original house. The couple dropped the front of an old range into the kitchen cabinetry, kept a fireplace with a mantle backed by an old mirror, and saved a second fireplace mantle that holds centre stage in the library.
When the current owners, who asked not to be named, bought the house in 2006, all they had to do was touch up the floors, paint the walls, reconfigure the closets and wire the home for audio. Otherwise, the seven-bedroom, soon-to-be six-bathroom, five-fireplace home is as they found it.
